Comprehensive Women’s Imaging at Iowa Radiology

Women’s health is complex and ever-changing, with unique needs that evolve across different stages of life. From routine screenings to advanced diagnostic exams, imaging plays a central role in early detection, prevention, and ongoing care. At Iowa Radiology, we believe imaging is only the beginning. With leading expertise, advanced technology, and a collaborative approach, we deliver insights that guide care and help women move forward with confidence.

Mammography – The Cornerstone of Breast Screening

Breast cancer affects one in eight women in the U.S., making mammography one of the most important screening tools available. The American College of Radiology recommends annual mammograms beginning at age 40 for women at average risk.

At Iowa Radiology, we offer 3D mammography (tomosynthesis), which produces layered images of the breast for better cancer detection and fewer false positives, especially in women with dense breast tissue. For women at higher risk, supplemental imaging such as breast MRI or ultrasound may also be recommended.

Understanding Breast Density

Nearly half of women over 40 have dense breasts, which can make it harder to detect cancer with mammography alone. Dense tissue is also an independent risk factor for breast cancer. That’s why additional imaging, such as ultrasound or MRI, may be suggested. Our breast imaging specialists provide clear, tailored recommendations based on individual risk factors.

Breast MRI and Ultrasound

  • Breast MRI is especially useful for women with a strong family history of breast cancer, genetic risk factors (such as BRCA mutations), or inconclusive mammogram results.
  • Breast ultrasound is often used as a supplement to mammography, particularly in women with dense breast tissue, to evaluate lumps or other areas of concern.

By offering a range of options, Iowa Radiology ensures that every patient receives the most appropriate and effective imaging for her situation.

Imaging Beyond the Breasts

Women’s imaging at Iowa Radiology extends beyond breast care. We provide imaging for gynecologic and reproductive health, including:

  • Pelvic ultrasound to evaluate conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, or abnormal bleeding
  • Transvaginal ultrasound for detailed imaging of the uterus and ovaries
  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG) for infertility evaluation
  • Bone density scans (DEXA) to assess osteoporosis risk, particularly after menopause

These services help providers diagnose conditions earlier and guide treatment plans tailored to each woman’s health needs.
