Baking

Lemon-Pistachio Crunch Cake

Lemon curd separates the layers of this fine-crumbed, very-special-occasion cake. Get started at least one day ahead: The frosting base and lemon curd must chill overnight before using. For the frosting, high-quality white chocolate (such as Lindt or Perugina) works best.

Chocolate Chunk, Orange and Hazelnut Cookies

A mug of hot chocolate or a glass of milk would complement these updated, sophisticated chocolate chip cookies.

Spicy Cheese Biscuits

Great with eggs, chili, soup or stew.

Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake

This family recipe is wonderful for dessert, breakfast or tea.

Poppy Seed Scones

Sarabeth Levine makes her scones at Sarabeth's in New York, with only one tablespoon of sugar, so they aren't oversweet. The dough is very sticky, but resist the temptation to knead in more flour — the stickiness means the scones will be tender. Partner them with jam or whipped cream for a real treat.

Double Chocolate-Cherry Brownies

Dried sour cherries and a hint of cinnamon add an original twist to a tried-and-true standby. And you don't even need a mixing bowl: The batter is made in the saucepan with the melted chocolate.

Poppy Seed Dinner Rolls

These all-American rolls are so flaky and buttery that everyone will want seconds. Be sure to begin preparing the dough a day before serving because it needs to be refrigerated overnight.

Raisin Tea Cake

Mary Tuohy, a Cappagh, County Tyrone, native who now lives in Redbank, New Jersey, has been making this raisin tea cake for so long that she can almost do it from memory. She says, "I can't remember where the recipe came from, but we used to bake it over an open turf fire back home. It came to me on a piece of dilapidated paper, which I still have." It's a very moist cake, she says, nearly foolproof. "You can't go wrong with it."

Overnight French Toast

Freedom from the skillet is a big benefit of this baked version of the classic.

Bake-Salé Lemon Meringue Pie

In the good old days, when everyone baked, the bake sale offered cooks a chance to strut their stuff. The competition was friendly but cut-throat, and winners were determined by whose sweets sold first - and at what premium price. In celebration of those leisurely times, here is a classic lemon meringue pie.

Cheddar Cornmeal Scones

Can be prepared in 45 minutes or less.

Carrot-Almond Cake with Brandied Whipped Cream

Brandied whipped cream adds the perfect finishing touch to this moist, luscious cake. Leftovers are terrific with coffee the next day.
